River Champions

The success of projects aiming to improve rivers for wildlife and people is largely influenced by the involvement of volunteers. We understand the importance of this contribution and wish to acknowledge those who may otherwise not get recognition.

River Champions can be nominated for several reasons. Below are a few examples of the types of Champions we are looking to recognise:

  • Do they have an ability to lead, motivate, inspire and engage?
  • Do they voluntarily attend meetings or events to represent their local community?
  • In their own time do they carry out surveys or samples to help monitor their local watercourse?
  • Do they help deliver work on the ground to improve their local waterway?
  • Do they have a consistent will to go out of their way to help others to successfully deliver a project?
  • Have they demonstrated a long term commitment to improving rivers?

'River Champions' seeks to recognise and celebrate the outstanding efforts of individuals contributing to river restoration in their area. It aims to recognise those dedicating time outside of their day-to-day roles to contribute toward improving rivers for wildlife and people. The selected River Champions will be recognised in the following ways:
  • Invited to the UK River Prize Dinner on 24th April 2024 to receive a River Champions Certificate.
  • Acknowledged on RRC social media platforms.
  • Featured in the RRC Bulletin which is sent out to over 2,000 contacts from across the UK and Europe.
  • Documented on the RRC website where their contribution and achievements will be detailed on a permanent River Champions webpage.

Please note, if the nomination is successful we will ask you to send us a photograph of the nominee for advertising purposes (mug-shot or action photo!)

*We suggest that the nominee should not be made aware of the nomination. This will create an element of surprise and will also mean that we can provide you with feedback on the nomination without the nominee knowing.

*Please note, only individuals can be nominated as a River Champion. Any nominations for groups cannot be judged.
