Nature-based Solutions (NbS) |
Nature-based Solutions (NbS) involve working with nature to restore natural ecosystems. They address societal challenges such as climate change, human health, food and water security, and disaster risk, while simultaneously providing benefits for human well-being and biodiversity. Nature-based solutions are thought to be a cost-effective way of addressing climate change, allowing landscapes and communities to adapt and build greater resilience. |
How does it link to river restoration? |
Traditionally rivers have been managed using manmade (grey) infrastructure. Implementing natural techinques in river restoration instead, helps nature recover and natural hydromorphological processes thrive. Examples include tree planting and other Natural Flood Management techniques, which use natural materials to slow the flow of water, reducing the chance of flash flooding, as well as increasing water storage throughout the landscape. |
