Jane led the feasibility and design to deculvert a 280m culverted length of the Merriott Stream, Somerset, restoring a naturalised channel and floodplain connection. Jane supervised the construction in 2022. Early monitoring (winter 2023) is showing the scheme has been successful in reconnecting the floodplain, improving biodiversity, and preventing flooding to the downstream village of Merriott.
On behalf of Mendip District Council and the Somerset Rivers Authority Jane has been leading the delivery of Natural Flood Management (NFM) projects around the district, and in partnership with FWAG SW. Jane led the appraisal to assess where NFM could be used to address and reduce flood risk across the region. Jane has also led the design of various schemes including the restoration of floodplain connectivity along a 1km length of the Hermitage Stream, near Frome. Link to published Storymap.
On behalf of the Severn Rivers Trust, Jane carried out a comprehensive feasibility study to investigate ways to improve fish passage along a section of the River Frome in Stonehouse, near Stroud. This led to the design to reconnect and reinstate a 1.2km long historic palaeochannel to improve fish and eel passage as well as provide new habitat. The project was successful completed in 2018.
