Implementation of natural flood risk management (NFM) and many other nature-based approaches to sustainability, has accelerated in recent years, including in the United Kingdom (UK). Both the National Infrastructure Assessment (2018) and the National Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Strategy for England (2020) recommend NFM amongst future priorities. In this presentation Simon and Marcus will provide a synthesis of recent advances in the natural science evidence base concerning the effectiveness of catchment-based natural flood management (NFM) in the United Kingdom. They will summarise the key new studies that have been published since their earlier review of this topic. The subject continues to be an area of active research and policy importance and Simon and Marcus will propose some guiding principles to help focus future research.
