Green Infrastructure

This is an approach to river restoration using natural techniques to create a diversity of natural habitats and green spaces. Green infrastructure (GI) or green engineering, can be implemented in urban or rural landscapes, at a variety of scales, from small vegetated walls and rooftops, to roadside tree planting, to larger raingardens, swales and natural riverbank protection. This approach is also beneficial for local communities to raise awareness of their local environment and help reconnect with nature for improved social well-being.

How does it link to river restoration?
Green infrastructure provides multiple benefits for river restoration. Natural approaches create the opportunity for habitats to develop and biodiversity to thrive. Greening banks and implementing natural woody material instream is also more aesthetically pleasing and cheaper than concrete or grey engineering.
