ADA chair: lack of SuDS strategy a threat to flood risk management

The government’s lack of a long-term strategy on SuDS is one of the three main threats to effective water level and flood risk management, according to the chairman of the ADA.

Speaking at the ADA’s 80th annual conference in London, the out-going chairman Henry Cator listed three main threats: over-regulation, lack of investment and the government’s lack of a strategy for future planning of SuDS.

Rural SuDS Improve Water Quality on River Penk

Staffordshire Wildlife Trust has created three rural sustainable drainage systems (RSuDS) to improve water quality along a stretch of the River Penk.

Routine monitoring by Natural England found parts of the Whiston Brook catchment are affected by agricultural run-off particularly during floods. The catchment contains Mottey Meadows, a SSSI, a special area of conservation and a national nature reserve.

Drainage Engineer Calls for Better SuDS Maintenance Plans

Planning applications should include specific SuDS maintenance plans as well as details of how to prevent major SuDS features from silting up during a development's construction, a drainage engineer has told a CIRIA audience.

While most planning applications include a brief SuDS maintenance plan, a plan for the maintenance of a SuDS scheme during construction is usually completely absent, Gordon Hunt, a drainage engineer for Oxfordshire County Council said recently at CIRIA's headquarters in London.
