UKRI launches consultation on Open Access policy

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has today launched a consultation as part of its Open Access Review. The consultation will inform the development of a new open access policy, aimed at ensuring that the published outputs of research are widely and freely accessible to all.

The UK government and UKRI recognise open access as an important part of achieving maximum impact from public investment in research.

Insect life has rebounded in a river receiving all of Swindon's wastewater thanks to substantial investments to improve sewage treatment, according to a DEFRA-funded study.

The River Ray in Wiltshire, which lies downstream of Swindon’s major sewage plant, is largely formed of treated wastewater and had seen steep declines in wildlife populations from the 1960s onwards.

Farm soils in Wales have a richer variety and number of microbial species than in woodland, bogs and conservation land, new research has found.

The two-year study used advanced DNA techniques to identify the microscopic invertebrates, bacteria and fungi in soils that are essential to the survival of plants and animals and are also vital for food production.

NERC funds research on impact of farm land use on Thames flooding

NERC is to award £1.25m to a research project which will examine the extent to which farmers in the west Thames area can prevent fluvial flooding by choosing different crops, building soil organic matter and planting more trees.

Led by the University of Reading, the researchers will work with farmers, communities and local authorities across the area to learn how different land management methods impact on flood risk.
