Delivering better water management through the planning system

Thursday, January 30, 2020

Water management is vital for good town planning. Planning for water enables our towns and cities to be greener, healthier, wealthier, more attractive and more resilient to climate change. Integrating water management brings multiple benefits, including:

  • Increased resilience
  • Delivering housing and strong local economy
  • Enhancing environment and greenspace.

The guidance explains the role of effective strategies and local plan policies that should be underpinned by effective engagement and evidence. The guidance also demonstrates how the application of critical success factors, combined with good policies can deliver good water management outcomes (what we term as the golden thread).

The guidance can be downloaded in several parts and a combined document

Part A - Main guidance
Part B - Case studies
Part C - Examples of good local policy
Part D - National Policy review
Part E - Characterisation of good local policy
Combined guidance
