NERC Advanced Training Short Course: Natural Flood Risk Management

The course, designed for PhD students, postdocs, MSc students and other early career researchers, is taught by experts in flood risk management, monitoring and modelling from JBA Consulting & Lancaster University.

The course covers:

  • An introduction to NFRM practice
  • Field experimental evidence and ways of measuring and quantifying hydrological change
  • The national WwNP Evidence Base and mapping NFRM opportunities; Modelling the distributed impact of NFRM interventions using open-source programmes
  • A risk-based approach to modelling NFRM benefits, including extreme events
  • How to estimate and reduce uncertainties in modelling
  • Multiple benefits of NFRM, including economics

The course combines field measurements with hands-on model exercises and other participatory activities; no prior knowledge of modelling is assumed
