This course provides a practical and interactive introduction to understanding and managing river erosion.
Participants will explore the key processes that cause erosion, the range of management options available, and how these can be applied in real-world river restoration projects. The course includes case studies, practical examples, and opportunities for discussion and Q&A, helping participants build confidence in assessing erosion issues and developing effective, sustainable solutions.
Erosion is a natural process that occurs in all river systems. This course introduces the types and drivers of riverbed and bank erosion, techniques for monitoring erosion, and strategies for managing and controlling erosion in different river environments.
The course is open to anyone with an interest in rivers and river restoration and does not require extensive prior knowledge of these topics.
Key learning outcomes
By the end of the course you will be able to:
Recognise the types and drivers of riverbed and bank erosion.
Understand the techniques used to monitor erosion.
Identify different erosion management approaches and how they can be applied to various river systems.
Level: Introductory
Estimated workload (VLE option): Approximately 2 hours per week for an average delegate.
Access to course materials
- VLE option: The course is designed to be completed over 4 weeks and is book-ended by the two Zoom sessions. If you are unable to complete the course within this period, a 4-week grace period is provided after the second Zoom session. After this, access will close.
- Live Zoom option: You will have access to related web materials (including session recording, the online test, and certificate) for 4 weeks after the live session, after which access will close.
Zoom Sessions for VLE (both voluntary)
- Introduction session (30mi)
An introduction to the course, to your fellow delegates, and practice using Google Earth, which is necessary for completing the learning activities. - End of course discussion session (1hr)
We will host an online discussion session where all attendees can join and engage in a conversation about the material.
Both sessions will be recorded and made available to delegates for training purposes and to revisit the material.
