Floodplain Re-connection Training Course

This one-day training course will improve your understanding of floodplain formation and processes to inform river restoration, floodplain re-connection and natural flood management projects. The course is held at Doddington Hall's new Wild House training centre which is in the perfect location to visit the floodplain re-wetting measures which the River Restoration Centre helped to design and implement. The course will be a mix of presentations, group work, and site visits to floodplain features and restoration interventions.

The course will cover the following:

  • Understanding floodplain formation and processes
  • Identifying historic floodplain boundaries and features using the Hydrogeomorphological Cartographic Method (HGM)
  • The different tools available to model floodplain connectivity and flow pathways
  • A site visit to see floodplain features, overland flow pathways, and re-connection techniques in a headwater setting
  • Approaches and options for re-connecting floodplains in different river types including low energy, high energy, and chalk streams
  • Monitoring and assessing floodplain condition

Ideal for river managers, rivers trusts, local authorities, and government organisations, this course provides practical skills for re-connecting floodplains and enhancing river systems.
