The Courses

The certificate is made up of four core online courses and a Field Skills course, which includes online learning and an in-person fieldwork day.

Field Skills course (blended learning)

  • Build practical field skills to support river restoration work
  • Identify natural forms and features in a real-world setting
  • Includes:
    • 2 weeks of online learning via the platform 

    • 1 in-person fieldwork day

  • Opportunity to meet and learn alongside other participants

Please note: Completion of Introduction to Hydromorphology (Level 1) and Desk-based Assessment for River Restoration is required before attending the fieldwork day.

Important: The Field Skills course (including the in-person fieldwork day) is a mandatory component of the certificate. Participants who do not complete this element will not be awarded the certificate.

Delivery Method Options

Book onto the course types that suit your working hours and availability. The following delivery types are available depending on demand:

Online Learning Platform over 4 weeks at 8 hours per course

1 day online course on Zoom software

2 week online platform + 1 day in-person fieldwork


Previously completed courses

If you have previously completed one or several of the training courses listed above you do not need to take the individual course again, but you do need to complete the end of course assessment. To take the assessment you will have access to the course material.


Certification route

The certificate can be undertaken in two ways:

Fast track

You will complete the courses sequentially via our online learning platform. The platform includes interactive videos, quizzes and guidance materials, and is fully self-paced allowing you to study at times that suit you.

The certificate is delivered through multiple intakes each year, so you can join at a time that works for you.

Each course requires approximately 8 hours of study over a 4-week period.

You will:

  • Complete 4 courses sequentially through the online platform
  • Undertake a blended field skills course, consisting of:
    • 2 weeks of online learning via the platform
    • 1 in-person fieldwork day
  • Pay a single up-front fee

Cost (Incl. VAT)

  • A single up-front fee
  • RRC member: £906
  • Non-member: £1177.80
  • A deduction of £150 is applied for each course that has been previously completed.
  • Provides a saving of 10% on the total cost of individual courses

Stacked learning

In this option, you sign up to our advertised training program courses, take them when it suits you, choosing which delivery methods to use (Online Learning Platform, 1 day Zoom or in-person), and you pay for each course individually. You will need to register for the certificate to undertake the assessment for any previous courses taken and to track your progress. There is a registration fee at the start of the certificate and a certification fee at the end of the certificate.

  • Registration fee of £36 and a certification fee on completion of £84
  • Cost of the 4 individual training courses and 1 fieldwork day:
    • Online (per course):
      • RRC member: £165*
      • Non-member: £222*
    • In-person (per course):
      • RRC member: £228
      • Non-member: £297*

Assessment & Award

The certificate will be assessed by multiple choice questions at the end of each course. Upon successful completion of the courses and fieldwork the Certificate will be awarded.

(This course cannot be used as credits towards an academic award)
