Midlands Regional Improvements for Fish Passage (Completed Date: Ongoing)

Matt led this award winning project which has seen low cost fish pass solutions implemented on Environment Agency gauging weirs across the Midlands Region. Through understanding fish behaviour and flow measurement needs the team was able to develop solutions to provide fish and eel passage whilst realising savings to the project in excess of £1m. A number of the sites are also acting as full scale pilot sites and on-going Research and Development is looking to validate the fisheries and hydraulic performance through a series of pit tagging exercises and flow gauging.

Wessex Heavily Modified Water Bodies - GEP programme (Completed Date: Ongoing)

Matt has led the development of a £20m programme of river restoration projects across the Wessex region. This high level programme of works has priorities over 250 individual projects and provided budget costs estimates to enable the programme to secure funding within the Environment Agencys Medium Term Plan. Projects range from geomorphological and habitat improvements to fish passage and changes to existing land management practices. The works have secured funding and will be implemented in a 4 year programme from 2013 onwards and aim to ensure that the heavily modified water bodies reach good ecological potential in line with WFD deadlines.

Matt is a senior chartered civil engineer with extensive river engineering and bioengineering experience. He has considerable experience of concept design through to detailed design of river restoration and flood risk management schemes. He is currently engaged in strategic planning and securing funding for programmes of WFD projects in the South West. He as also recently led a project exploring innovative low cost fish passage solutions that was Highly Commended in the efficiencies category of the Environment Agencys Project Excellence Awards 2013. These low cost fish passage solutions are also subject to on-going research and development to prove there fisheries and hydraulic performance.
