Scientists using drones to monitor water quality

Tuesday, September 18, 2018

Scientists are trialling the use of drones and in situ technologies to monitor water quality.

The project, called the Multiscale Observation Networks for Optical Monitoring of Coastal waters, Lakes and Estuaries (MONOCLE), is funded by the EU Horizon 2020 programme and will work in tandem with the satellite earth observation techniques which are also being used to provide water quality data.

The ground readings provided by MONOCLE will be used to confirm satellite readings and help improve satellite products, according to Plymouth Marine Laboratory. The scientists aim to develop a “versatile and sustainable in situ observation network” that can be used for “large rivers, lakes, reservoirs, estuaries, bays, and other coastal zones, growing into a self-supporting in situ service alongside earth observation water quality services”.
