Innovative digital projects that will tackle environmental challenges receive funding

The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) has awarded individual grants of up to £1.2 million to seven research projects that will use cutting-edge digital technology to advance environmental outcomes.

As part of the ‘Constructing a Digital Environment’ Programme, these projects will seek to develop tools and systems that will tackle real-life environmental challenges. The Programme aims to construct a digitally enabled environment which benefits researchers, policy makers, businesses, communities and individuals. It is funded through the Strategic Priorities Fund.

Green projects given support to attract private sector investment

New investment approach announced to involve private sector in environmental projects, helping to tackle climate change and restore nature.

Four projects which will protect and restore valuable habitats have been selected to receive funding in a pilot scheme to encourage sustainable private sector investment in our natural environment.

Defra, the Environment Agency (EA), Esmée Fairbairn Foundation (EFF) and Triodos Bank UK have formed a collaboration to support environmental projects to create sustainable funding models.

Environment Agency funding to help restore River Ver in St Albans

The Environment Agency has pledged £300,000 for a master plan to restore a river that dried up last summer.

A lake that is part of the River Ver in Verulamium Park, St Albans completely disappeared in September last year, when more than 200 people protested outside the Ye Olde Fighting Cocks pub.

The protest, organised by the Ver Valley Society, called for authorities to acknowledge how dry the river had become.

Funding Opportunity: UKRI citizen science exploration grants

UK Research and innovation is launching a new £400,000 funding call to encourage researchers and innovators to experiment with citizen science.

Citizen science is an important way in which diverse groups of people can participate and collaborate in research and innovation. This could include crowdsourcing data, working with volunteers to analyse existing datasets, collaborating with communities in designing research programmes, and approaches to innovation that involve diverse groups of people in the innovation process.  

New agreement with Esmée Fairbairn Foundation helps implement 13 river improvement projects across England

The Rivers Trust has just signed an exciting new agreement with the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation (EFF) to provide financial loans to local Rivers Trusts to help them implement 13 river improvement projects across England.

The loans will enable local Rivers Trusts to cash-flow the implementation of their Water Environment Grant projects – a government grant scheme which provides funding to improve the water environment in rural England. Once the projects have been completed and reimbursed by WEG, the loan will be returned to EFF.
