Further calls for the inclusion of natural solutions in flood alleviation schemes were made following the severe floods in Cumbria, December 2015. Acknowledging ongoing debates around the evidence for tree cover as an effective flood mitigation measure, the UK’s Centre for Ecology & Hydrology has published results of a systematic review of the current evidence in order to inform policy and planning decisions, and to identify knowledge gaps and areas for priority research.

Hi, Have you considered using beavers in the headwaters? It has been shown to be effective in delaying and reducing peak flow. Look at the Forestry Commission's Pickering Project to demonstrate the use of "leaky" dams but beavers do this naturally. Check out the research done at Exeter and Stirling University. All beavers need is the space to exist to provide this valuable ecoservice and you don't have costly maintenance work to undertake. Natural system of dams helping a natural process.
