The Top 3 Challenges in Wastewater & Sewage Treatment

New research reveals that the top 3 challenges facing the Wastewater and Sewage Treatment Industry are centered around regulatory, environmental & energy issues.

As part of the research for The Wastewater & Sewage Treatment Expo 2017 we surveyed the wastewater and sewage treatment community to help understand the sector's focus for the next 12 months.

The full report from the survey will be ready next week, but we wanted to share a sneak peek at the results with you as they have confirmed the importance of many sessions taking place at The Wastewater & Sewage Treatment Expo 2017 this year.

The following top priorities are taken from the water companies and industrial users of wastewater and sewage treatment services and showcase the relevant discussions at our Expo this 5-6th July:

1. Regulatory Issues particularly industrial deregulation, such as a national waste strategy, regulator confidence, AMP constraints & other compliance issues

  • The 'Water Blueprint' driving water policy over the longer term
  • Developing a regulatory system that puts customers at the centre, whilst allowing water companies to thrive and grow
  • What legislative instruments can the EU use to boost water reuse?
  • Expected impact of Water Framework Directive

2. Environmental and Social Challenges including approved biosolids recycling, environmental impact of wastewater and sewage treatment and carbon neutrality

  • Maximising water reuse and acknowledging the role of treated wastewater reuse as an alternative source of water supply
  • Ensuring a substantial increase in recycling and safe reuse globally by 2030 to meet UN Sustainable Development Goal 6 on Water and Sanitation
  • The significant environmental, social and economic benefits of reusing treated wastewater. Alleviating water resource pressure by substituting abstraction
  • Increasing water security in order to overcome the challenges brought on by climate change and human influence
  • To what extent is concern for the environment driving sector growth for waste water services?

3. Energy and taking advantage of opportunities to increase energy production and efficiency to lower costs and reduce the impact on climate change

  • Recognising the lower investment costs and energy required by water reuse compared with desalination or water transfer
  • Biogas production from wastewater treatment
  • Wastewater as an energy source: Incorporating technologies that use the full potential of wastewater, cut electricity usage, save costs and protect the environment

With over 25 hours of discussions tackling these key issues, there is no other free-to-attend exhibition that presents this level of knowledge sharing.
