Valuing the Environment 2017: EU Exit and the 25 Year Plan for the Environment

Date:
Wednesday, July 5, 2017 - 09:00 to 17:00
Location:
Central London

Hear from: Dr Therese Coffey MP, Defra Parliamentary Under-Secretary, Dieter Helm, Natural Capital Committee and 25 Year Plan for the Environment Pioneer Projects

The EU provides the UK with key environmental legal protections. Following the triggering of Article 50 current EU laws will be transcibed into domestic law, providing both considerable challenges and opportunities for the UK Government to select priorities that work best for the UK.

Despite this it has been suggested up to one third of the UK's environmental protections will be lost in the Great Repeal Bill. The Environmental Audit Committee has warned that protections for wildlife and habitats may be weaker after EU Exit if the Government does not take quick action during the Article 50 process.

This conference will consider if the regulatory framework is fit for purpose at a pivotal moment for the UK and assess the progress of the 25 Year Plan for the Environment pioneer projects for incorporating the value of nature into policy to deliver a cleaner, greener, healthier environment.

This interdisciplinary event will bring together economists, regulators, consultants, social scientists and environmental scientists to provide an update on Government's plans for our environment, the steps being taken to underpin the natural capital approach by businesses and the projects being undertaken to ensure we continue to deliver world leading environmental protections.
