Land Use and Hydrological Extremes

Land use change is one of the key drivers of hydrological extremes. The recent flood events in Northern England and Scotland have highlighted the importance of managing the land to store water and slow the flow.

The 2010-2012 hydrological droughts in England and Wales had major implications for crops and groundwater stores, highlighting the UK's vulnerability to sustained periods of rainfall deficiency. This meeting will bring together drought and flood risk scientists and practitioners to discuss current research in the area of land-use and hydrological extremes and to discuss the need for innovative river and water management strategies to reduce the impact of future events.
